Veering Off the Beaten Path

Original photos for Melange Mode

Marfa, an artist community located in the high desert of West Texas, was a highlight of my recent cross country road trip. With a population of 1,981, Marfa is most well known for the incredible outdoor installations of artist Donald Judd, the Marfa Lights, movies such as No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood, and the Prada Marfa art installation.

If you find yourself near Marfa (coordinates 30.3119 N, 104.0247 W), we recommend visiting Freda, an exceptionally well curated lifestyle boutique, eating (and getting flowers if you want them) at Buns and Roses, grabbing a drink at Padre's, picking up a crystal from Moonlight Gemstones, and spending the night in a trailer or teepee at El Cosmico.

Indulge in a Work of Art

We're loving minimal sculptural jewelry to soothe those winter blues.
Pair with a simple sweater or dress, these pieces stand out as art in their own right. We love these two up and comers, who create clean yet thoughtful pieces.
AEA Collection is even recreating their designs using 3D printing for their Spring Collection, the next new wave in design.

Photographer Billy Kidd Ponders Beauty and Its Transience

We stopped by Transience, fashion and fine art  photographer Billy Kidd's fist solo exhibit. Billy is the boyfriend of our friend Heather Huey, a renowned haute milliner. This exhibit juxtaposes elegant and richly colored photographs of dying flowers with images of delicate black and white female nudes. Heather was one of the models photographed in his exhibit and has served as a muse to Billy before, for their recent collaboration last spring's Billy Kidd Shot Heather Huey.

The opening night of the exhibit also served for great people watching. We loved this Berliner's minimalistic style and spotted some great silver hair as well.

This exhibit is on display at Masters & Pelavin Gallery until December 7th, 2013.

Weaving and Catching Dreams

Inspired by huge white dream catchers we saw in a downtown New York art gallery, we decided to make our own together before Ana headed to the west coast.

The process took several sessions and the result is not quite the same as the inspiration, but each dream catcher is unique and it's irregularities are what make it special.

Ana's is currently in transit to San Francisco and Ronit's is already up on her wall in New York.

Feeling crafty? Make your own!
